Is there a capability or module that allows merchants to take pre-orders (or backorders, items on request, etc.) for items. In other words, a merchant sells something that isn't yet available, but the buyer places the order, and when the seller is ready to ship the product, then the buyer is charged and the transaction is completed. Thanks.
I would add partial order too
Somewhat often, only part of an order can get shipped, while waiting for the remainder to come in.
When a partial order is shipped, the email update would indicate what was shipped and also when the remaining items are expected to ship. This way, customer has some idea of what to expect.
Also, if needed if customer declines any or all of the un-shipped part, then partial refund (including tax and partial shipping) could also be issued and additional email would also include this info. (partial shipping refund would be calculated on what the shipping would have been had the un-shipped/declined items not been part of the original order, thus making it all square from the customer's point of view)
There could even be a special coupon to go out for next order as an incentive for customer to not decline the unshipped part of the order, like "for your inconvenience, please use coupon iwantmystuff to take additional 5% off your next order" type of thing to encourage good customer relations and reduce declines. This could be in addition to any other coupons they might have .
For instance, you could have a coupon array:
iwantmystuff,valentines10
to have both iwantmystuff and also valentines10 both be used for that same order.

Sure, but then how does the storekeeper track which orders have items on backorder? And when they're looking at the items in the order, how do they tell which items were back-ordered? And finally, when new inventory is added, how would the shopkeeper know which orders can now be filled?
My guess is to create an order status of "Back-ordered", and set an order containing out-of-stock items to that status when attempting to fulfill the order. Then go back whenever new inventory is received to dig through all the orders with "Back-ordered" status to see if they can now be fulfilled.
That would be a very tedious process, though, if the system doesn't just show them which items in those orders are back-ordered, or which items within those orders are now in-stock.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but clearly I'm not the only one who wants features like this.
The ability to part ship and enter into the backend what bits have gone and which bits are still to follow would be absolutely invaluable.

I have a backordered status, but I agree there should be a status per product, not just per order, as often 1 item out of an order is backorder. Right now, I add a comment like "all but x shipped. It will ship as soon as available" but would be nice if each product could have a status so I could search for these products easier.
Running Opencart v3.0.3.9 with multi-stores and the default template from https://www.labeshops.com which has links to all my stores.
+1 This is a royal pain to deal with.
