Well, themes/templates are about taste and I don't have any so I cannot advice you on that.
I just use the default V3 theme (adjusted I admit) for convenience and with that one I know exactly what is happening, where, how and why.

There is nothing wrong with looking for free extensions, perfectly fine.
I have seen some really good ones, some even better than some paid ones but also some pretty poor ones in the hack category.
(hack category = quick fix targeting symptoms without considering the end-to-end implications, they will bite you in the end)

The only thing I would watch out for are the free extensions which also have a paid version.
Generally the quality of those is poor, functionality stripped bare and support far far away.
That should not come as a surprise as the only reason for putting out a free version is to steer you towards the paid version.
The marketplace is in that sense no different from any other phone app store although I have not seen much "in-extension" ads/purchases.
Though it looks like the new version of OC (probably due in 2057) is going in that direction, shame.

If you want/need one of those free extensions which also have a paid version, better take the paid version from the start and save (perhaps not money) but a lot of time and frustration.

Good luck.

The only thing you should remember when buying themes: DO NOT buy Journal theme. The rest is a matter of taste, really.

I would tend to agree I'm afraid. I know it looks very pretty and does a lot but it's sooo complex and hard to work with.

There's a very good discussion about themes here:

And here's a lovely theme we developed but we can't give it away free sadly:

Yeah, I recently even started to charge twice more for any Journal 3 customization. Extremely dumb code, which is also heavily cached.

They have to otherwise the internet would grind to a halt.

Honestly that sounds fair because it does take at least 2x as long, speaking from experience also.

Yes, there's nothing wrong with caching per se.

It is if it's sole purpose is to remedy the symptoms of a sloppy design and/or implementation.

well, let me put it this way, if you have 100+ concurrent customers happily and vigorously clicking away at your products then fine but if you only have 10 max and you cannot make your site perform without virtually page caching, then your solution is not scalable. And then caching is the last thing you can do.

I do like how jounal looks but then again, in our business, if the site looks better than the products we are in the wrong business.

Not sure about Magento, haven visited that for a long time.

Still worse e-commerce solution you may find. Well, maybe OSCommerce is worse, but not sure, since it stuck in 90s.

True OsCommerce is old, I use to have that many years ago.
Only good thing about OsCommerce was that the developers knew how the internet works, most OC developers have no clue.

Isn't OpenCart a fork of OSCommerce?

Maybe they took it as a start back in 1864, but OpenCart improved a lot since then and OSCommerce stuck in dinosaur era.
