I have noticed that if customer by mistake enters any special characters in the email field for example xxx,xxx@xxx.xxx and then tries to place an order, he simply gets an alert which says “error” and not the usual message that says “ doesn’t appear to be valid email”
Many clients can’t figure out what they done wrong and they abandon the order.
Any idea how to fix this?

You will find this in your catalog/language
checkout/checkout.php file

Opencart standard
E-Mail address does not appear to be valid!

So this is journal - you can ask your theme developer for support
