In some major search-engines, for example Yahoo!, OpenCart.org comes up way ahead of OpenCart.com

It is a single page talking about OpenCart v0.93; the contact is David Stoddard which might also explain why 'Daniel' is often refered to as 'David', the sole developer in numerous sources referencing OpenCart.

It is a frequent first visit and gives a very bad impression. If this domain is under OpenCart project control, would it not be possible to point it at OpenCart.com ?

If Daniel owned the domain then sure it would be possible, however it's registered to David, so unless he changes it, there's nothing that can be done

I don't know who David Stoddard is, nor any of the history. Is he not friendly? Opencart.org serves him no purpose but has a detrimental on OpenCart.
