Dear All,

I am using my opencart for few years. Now my website is running slow. I don't know what is better, either go for an upgrade or run optimization process on my current website. Can you please send me few facts why 3.0.2 is better. I know that graphic is different and engine etc. But what makes 3.0.2 better than 1.5.6

I can still find a lot of modules for 1.5.6. I heard also that 1.5.6 is faster... I need really help to make a decision.

I will really appreciate any help,

Best regards,

Sebastian

This has been covered many times in the forums. Do a bit of looking and you find loads to read. Personally I stick with OC 1.5.6.5. It's great, fast, lots of free extensions and does exactly what me and my clients need. Long live 1.5! Lol.

Well, that's a very interesting Question. :-)

And quite hard to reply to, since most won't probably know. They don't know
things like API's, by example, to connect/use other than 'regular' OC coded Content,
and/or Extensions, to 'communicate' with OC, kind of. But for a regular OC Admin User,
nothing really changed, exept for some Functions and Buttons, partly first to be
found, in order to get along.

In addition, OC-3 implemented some Admin Functions, only existing as Addon-Mods
for earlier v.1 - 2 Versions. And it also uses OcMod, the 'poorer' step-sister of VqMod
(since v.2.x). As well as partly new Code, to get along with TWIG, which has been
replacing PHP, in some Sections, like for Themes and in some Admin Sections.
It seems to be easier on code, but of real Value only for those, familiar with TWIG.

Still, one might further use VqMods, and even OC PHP-coded Themes, since some
free Extensions exist, to avoid the use of 'latest' ways of doing it. But then, it would not
make much sense, to move up in the first Place, to then install Mod's, to further use
the 'old' Code, strictly technically at least. And older Version Code won't work anyway,
without beeing 'upgraded', to meet latest Specs.

But it's not only about Technique, talking about OC, it's also a highly 'strategic' matter,
at least from the point of View of of Dev's, eager to continue, to earn some bread. And
this makes it a little complicated, and would easy end up in arguments, to talk about
Pro and Contra of different Versions.

Still, latest OC is not a 'final' Edition yet, as you can find out on the OC Github Page, as
well as around here. And if one is not able, to technically 'follow' that Site, and fix,
what's known to be faulty, one has to rely on the Forum, to possibly find some nice
Guy, to be of help for free.
Which may not be the Case, when it comes to 'custom' Details, one likes to change in an
existing System. Like everywhere, in the real World too, when it comes to 'latest' Things.

But from the Visitors Point of View, nothing really has changed, since the Move from
'static' to 'responsive' Themes. And it would be hard to guess, what OC Version one uses,
from v.3.x down to v.1.5.6.x, if a 1.5.x is equipped with an OC-2 Bootstrap Theme, like here:
Test Site, not always error-free:
http://www.velomech.ch/shop/

The only real Problem for OC v.1.5.6.x/OC v.2.x powered Shops would be a new PHP
Version, affecting larger portions of OC Version Code, and so possibly too expensive,
to still get it fixed. But whenever this will happen, even OC-3 will be a thing out of the
past, and most around here won't care about it anymore. But latest 1.5.6.x can be made
work easy, so far at least, up to (tested) PHP v.7.2x, and that Version will still exist
for the coming few Years.

So, make your Choice. But better, depending only on your needs, and not on Dreams,
that Life would be easier, by selecting 'least' yet tested Editions. Microsoft or OC, there
is no Difference, they all came with a Bunch of Bugs. Or then using 'unfixed' older OC
Editions, existing troughout the OC v.2.x Range. Some work will therefore be involved,
in any Case, and that also depends on your own existing OC-Wisdom, to eventually
avoid (too much) Expenses.

It's one reason, why I got stuck, with my Win XP, and v.1.5.6.5, but both of them made
it up to today, despite of all negative prognoses and warnings. And so avoiding 18 OC
Installations, from v.2.0 up to the Last, among a couple of hundred most important Fixes.
It gave me more time, to browse around in ton's of already existing wisdom, instead of
begging for new one all the time. Especially under the aspect of noticeable declining
free assistance, during my soon 5 Years of OC Existence.

But that's only my personal View, and I had lots of time, but never planned, to ever
run a real Shop anymore in the first place.

Good Luck!
Ernie
