Hi All
Our website has always been a little on the slow side, 5-10sec page loads were rare but happened one and off. However this last week all of a sudden it hit a new height with all page loads taking approximately a minute to load. I have checked with our host and we are hitting no thresholds so there's no problem on their end and their only solution is that some process seems to be waiting before continuing to load the site.
The admin side of the website works perfectly fine, taking a few seconds to load any page. So it's strictly the main site that is experiencing extreme slowdown. I've looked through previous threads and the main thing I found was to take off category count but that had a negligent effect.
My developer is currently without a computer for 2-4 weeks so I'm looking for some advice on a solution. Is this something malicious, is it something where I should look to upgrade to the latest version or is there an extension out there that is guaranteed to fix it. Overall just looking to see if there's anything I can do with my limited understanding of the system whilst my developer is unavailable.

The quickest solution would be to contact your host and see what might slow down performance on your store specifically.

I have been speaking to them. They basically have noted that because we're not hitting the limits on their end it's not really a part of a the service that they offer and I need to be looking to developers. They did note that there was a large number of requests and that the home page is currently 5mb which is rather large.
But it's hard to see why that translates to almost a minute. I can't even put the website through an analyser because it's loading too slow to register.

Run a website analyzer. Free ones can be found by looking on Google.

go to gtmetrix. run a scan on your site, once complete click on 'waterfall' this will show which parts of your site are causing the slow down.
Do you have a theme running on the site at all? its most likely css files or javascript causing a slow down.
