Hook into a service like SmushIt! or Yahoo's service so images are compressed when uploaded - probably better as a mod so it can be removed.

This would probably be faster than going to the effort of trying to integrate your own version, or another third party's.

Came across http://abhirama.wordpress.com/2010/10/2 ... -smush-it/ for a tool that can run on the server to reduce the current images. Don't forget to exclude gifs for your links to them will break. Use the tip link on the download page to grab a zip / gz / bzip2 file.

I am the creator of the above mentioned tool and the gif bug has been fixed. Also, you can download the binary file from the download section of the repo.
