For downloadable products all I need to do is set the Payment options to Complete and then the customer can download the product after payment. however when I go to Option settings I see the following as default:

Order Status as : Pending

Processing Order Status checked as: Complete, Pending, Processing, Reversed, Shipped

Complete Order Status checked as: Complete, Shipped

Fraud Order Status: Canceled

What do they really mean and is it really necessary to make some changes for downloadable products ?

Order Status as : Pending

This status is assigned, when order is added.

Processing Order Status checked as: Complete, Pending, Processing, Reversed, Shipped

This one is when payment is made and order is processing.

Complete Order Status checked as: Complete, Shipped

This one is assigned, when order is shipped, completed etc.

Fraud Order Status: Canceled

This status is pretty rare and assigned only when something suspicious happens (e.g.: coupon is used over the limit).

The problem is when you set your payment option to Complete, the "Order Status: Pending" would have no effect. the status is assigned as Complete when the order is added.
Processing Order Status checked as: Complete, Pending, Processing, Reversed, Shipped : This one is when payment is made and order is processing.
What's really confusing to me is that how the order can be processing and at the same time be Complete, Pending, Reversed and Shipped. I mean order processing is only Processing. it's not Complete. it's not anything else. why would even be any other options to be checked. I was expecting a drop-down menu to pick one option not just multi-options.

This one is sensible but why would be any other options ?

All in all where exactly are these options applied to ? for example I don't see any Shipped status as a Complete Order Status anywhere. it's very confusing.

Of course. Because in store settings you set DEFAULT values, which can be overridden by extensions.

For you it is Processing, for another store if would be Complete etc. Select the statuses YOU need to use as Processing.

There is not any default setting for set order status for a special type of products, you can set order status when its in processing and when it is in complete stage.

No, its not. Create Shipped status and when you actually ship the order, mark it with Shipped status.
That's it. you said mark it. it means that there must be an option somewhere that can be marked by the admin to let the customer know of the order status. right ? two questions:

1. where can I mark these options ? I mean where exactly are they located ? when I go to orders, there's only ONE order status to change and it makes sense. there's no any other options like Processing Order Status or Complete Order Status.
2. that said, these options have no use for downloadable contents, right ?
