Removing sub-category link from menu

I want to have products in sub-categories but I do not want the subcategory links to show in the left menu. What should I edit in category.php?

Did you ever figure out how to do this? I just created my own hard-coded one from scratch, to solve this and a couple of other things I didn't like about the default navigation.

Yes, I just commented out the code that displays the subcategories.
