Upgrading - no a clue

I currently run Opencart 1.5.6.2. I am wondering whether to upgrade to the latest version and how much work it will be. Will I have to repurchase any extensions I have or re-download them for the new version? Will any changes to the code and css be affected.
Not sure where to start to be honest.

at best, by reading about it on the various Topics on this Forum.
And never forget, there is no such thing, as an official DEFAULT OC Upgrade Extension,
it has not been planned, and it will not work, you will kill your DB and your Shop-Setup,
if you ignore one single FACT!
Also, you will be required to change everything, from the theme down to the
last Extension, you used before.
Good Luck

Yes, you will need to download the current version of each module and theme that you have. Most developers shouldn't be charging for the new version but anything is possible. You won't know for sure until you go and take a look at each of them.
I would suggest upgrading to v2.2 for sure. It can be tricky but Q has created an upgrade script (look in the 2.x install upgrade section of the forum) and it works well.
