Bugs - patches

Hello,

I am new to opencart and i have a question about the way patches work.
After a small bug i found to opencart admin->controller->customer->customer.php i would like to know if for example someone report a security bug, is there any place where i could find the official patch for this bug?
And if yes, then i just copy a file to my server which removes the previous version with the bug or i have to wait until the next version of opencart where this bug will be fixed.
And what if i do not want to upgrade my version for example from 2.2 to 2.3?
