Using 1.5 data base in 2.x

I am planning my upgrade to 2.x. Will I be able to use my existing 1.5.6 database? Or so I have to accept that all my customers will be lost unless I manually add them?

I would create a new DB, in order to avoid possibly destructing the old one,
as seen on the image below. To copy the old one into a new One, you first have
to create a new, empty DB.
