I'm trying to upgrade an old installation of opencart from 1.5.0 to a later version but each one seems to break the installations.

I've done some research on google and it looks ot be a commonm problem with the modules but I can't seem to find a fix

after an update from 1.5.0 to 1.5.1 the page doesn't render and has a lot of similar errors at the top of the page like
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /var/www/opencart/catalog/controller/common/column_left.php on line 49

can anyone help or point me in the way of a workign upgrade script

thanks

They all seem to be paid plug-ins and I'm not sure if they will work. are there no upgrade scripts for opencart from 1.5.0 to 1.5.1 atleast. it must have been a big problem at the time

I would suggest upgrading all the way to v1.5.6.4 and you'll have to upgrade all of your modules and theme. There are a lot of changes in between but well worth it.

Make a backup of your files and database first!

I'd be happy to try and upgrade to 1.5.6.4 but there are some major problems with the databse in 1.5.0 which wont let it get upgraded to anything

I think the errors are due to the way the plug-ins are stored in the database

the top of the page is full of these type of errors
Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /var/www/opencart/catalog/controller/common/column_left.php on line 49

I'd have to know how you're going about doing the update. You should backup all of your files and database and then I would suggest creating a new database and importing the backup file into it BEFORE you run the upgrade script. In a new folder, upload all of the new files and then run the upgrade script with the new database. You should be able to get through it.

This method will allow you to keep your current store live while you get this upgrade done.
