A 1.5.6.4 store I built had a strange issue recently:
The store had been running flawlessly, and no upgrade or file changes had been made.
As far as I could tell no changes had been made to the store settings either.

One day this happened:
Any existing user trying to log in got the generic "Warning: No match for e-mail or password" error.
New users were fine.
If existing users who got that error hit the 'forgotten password' link and had a new password generated, they could log in with the new password.

I checked the store encryption value in the settings and it hadn't seemed to have been changed.

Any idea why this may have occurred?

And did the server have any php scripts / extensions / configurations change when the passwords started failing?
Sounds like eg mcrypt got dropped / upgraded, maybe as part of a php update. Some hosts are like that, just let you find out the hard way.
