Hello all.
I am currently using Opencart 1.5.5.1.
I would like to update to Opencart 2 (latest version).

I have quite a few mods on my 1.5.5.1 setup, so I was wondering if I installed a fresh copy of Opencart 2 in another directory, if I would be able to export and import my current 1.5.5.1 store database into the newly installed Opencart 2.0.

My current setup is as follows:
Current Opencart 1.5.5.1 installation is on example.com/shop/
Want to install Opencart 2 in root directory: example.com/

I figure instead of upgrading my current installation to 2.0 and deal with errors, etc., I would install Opencart 2 in the root directory and reconfigure all the mods again until all is working perfectly. Once all is moved over from 1.5.5.1 and configured properly, I would use example.com/ for access to my online shop.

Does this sound correct and Is this possible?

Thank you, experts!

Yup, I am currently doing the same thing. Make sure you make a new database for 2.0 and you should be good.

Running Opencart v3.0.3.9 with multi-stores and the default template from https://www.labeshops.com which has links to all my stores.

Can you export and import customers and previous orders? A friend of mine has asked me to help with upgrade from 1.5.x to latest. I want to plan this out before I start. Thanks for any replies. ;)
