add a comment field to screen and mysql

i am enjoying learning this software and using it. Thanks daniel.

my question:

i need to add a comment field to the single product page so a customer can add features to a product like requesting extra pickles or a type of cheese. Also i would like to display that comment field below each product chosen on the Order Summary page. i am a php/mysql developer.

i assume its doable but where would i add/change code and add a field to the mysql table?
