Logo and navbar issue

Hi guys

I recently installed the latest version of opencart and can't achieve two simple, I thought, things.

I want the logo moved up to the top left of the pages and the navbar that runs from left to right across the screen disabled leaving only the nav bar on the left or right, those I can turn on and they work as I require.

I have looked at the opencart documentation but a lot of their own links don't work and take you back to the same page, like in the Designer Guide there are three links in the text and none of them work.

Any pointers on how to get the logo moved and the navbar removed would be much appreciated.
The logo position already seems to be 0 0 0 in the stylesheet but changing the numbers makes no difference to the logo position.

I have included an image, I want the black and blue logo up at the same level as the search box and the blue navbar gone.
