then next to your store listing, click "Edit" (the blue box)
Then edit "Local" and "Option" for checkout settings.

followed your instructions and there was nothing under system -> settings in both local or option regarding personal details when a customer is signing up? i was not referring to my own details but when someone wants to buy an item and go to checkout and they have to put in their own details, i would like to make some changes to that, like removing the mandory details of telephone number
I haven't gotten that far in setting up my shop yet.
Can you post a screen shot of what customers are being forced to fill out?

Ive uploaded a picture
When you pick your products and your about to order, you have to enter in your personal details, and telephone is one of the mandory fields as you can see in the picture with the red star next to it, i dont want it to a mandatory field, how do i change that? i want it to be optional

Oh, I'm sure that can be changed in the script, but personally I think you should leave that alone.
You see, all credit cards have phone numbers attached to them, and the phone number is needed to verify the credit card as legit. If the phone number doesn't match the phone number on the credit card, then the order will be flagged as a possible fraud, and you should then be alerted to call the phone number given and/or on the credit card, so the persons ownership of the credit card and the order made with the card can be verified over the phone through a series of questions.

It could be possible to hire a script writer to make it mandatory for credit cards, and then optional for other payment methods such as paypal and bitcoin.
I may look into this myself, because online payments such as paypal and bitcoin are already secure. They must be signed in to those services to use them, so that removes the need for a phone number.

Did you find an answer? I, too, would like to remove the required phone number entry field. I think it is a ridiculous requirement and just serves to make people feel like their privacy is being invaded. Also, it isn't the norm from what I've seen elsewhere. I've ordered products online dozens of times and can't remember having to enter my phone number even once.
