Mostly all the chit-chats about OpenCart are about how it looks, some features... and this is great.
1. did anybody try to handle huge inventory (from responsive design :-)?
2. didn't anybody receive a message 'mySQL is gone'...
--------------------------------
so i am looking for real people who would like to build (or already have) store(s) with HUGE inventory and who are thinking not only shopping experience for the visitors/customers, but make their life easier?
--------------------------------
i have

- 20 categories/200 products (2 sites)
- 4000 categories/15000 products
- 30 categories/up to 70000 products (tested)
2.0.1.1

You forgot to mention the price.
what you plan, will require a professional Setup. starting with a fine dedicated Server with a unique IP, connected to a fast line, down to a clean set up software, optimized and filled with products, I imagine, it will not be done by a few hundred bucks only investment. (US). Also, you should place a link to one of your Sites, so, one can assume, what's waiting...
no offense, just an idea...

i do not mind to make even more, than you mentioned :-)
what i really want is to avoid wasting my time on what must be already "under-the-hood"
my point is: to have some features already in shopping cart, after i get it installed.
- conflicts between extensions (hate calculate index in ocmod)
- it's possible to use override engine in 1.5, but in 2.*, events could break everything.
do not send to another place on this forum... suggestions... i do not know who is listening them, sorry.
i am looking for somebody who is interested in building high performance shopping cart, with acceptable response time even on share hosting, and easy-to-handle inventory...
dedicated server... well, i have this too, test server, shared hosting - i can kill them all, it's not a problem. i want them to keep working.
demo? real ones
~20 cats / 200 products - http://www.skincarebymd.com (2.0.1.1)
- 3K+ cats / ~15K products - http://www.ajparts.info (1.5.6.4)
i can think about to get to my test server - 70K products, category/repair... and deadcow extension (i have my own version for 2.0.1.1).
to see 'before' and 'after'...
- server is gone
- memory is not enough (15K products -> 60K descriptions for 4-language website)

Hi!
Interesting discussion about this kind of issue...
In the last few months we deal with kind of issue and solve it...
Its true that, the main problem its the USD or Euro (your budget)
As an small example, we've deal to achieve, 35 k products from 6 different suppliers, all products are 'coming' per feeds, that are running cron-ed every day, all this onto 6 GB RAM VPS on SSD, with quite high monthly costing price.
So as an conclusion, it could be done (not responsive front layout), but its running very well and its not cheap
Success!

Hi, we have build huge stores with 20 K products. 3 supply sources, daily updates via feeds and speed is everything for us.
We managed to put the store on a shared hosting and get normal page load speed / server response times. We work with CSV Import / Export mod, build a mod to cache and show all sorts of product count and filter counts.
We are inserting the feeds with cron when not manually updating with CSV import export but to avoid huge RAM usage, we split them to chunks and process few hundreds of lines at once.
So it is possible to get the huge store on a shared hosting but requires several little tricks to be applied up-front.
