OpenCart 2.0 and thousands of products

I have a store running 1.5.x.x and I have close to 10 thousand products in that store. Because of this my store is super slow and I can't really find a decent solution to this. I have tried the 'Speed Up Opencart' extension which helped but not enough to satisfy me. I have done everything I can possibly thing of with little to no effect.

I think it all boils down to an extension called 'Product Series'. I use this to tie similar products together on the product page. For example I have shower bases that come in many colors. So I use product series to display those color swatches the users. They can click these swatches and be directed to that same product but of a different color. I was told that although this extension is useful its coded badly and could be accounting for my store slowdown, indexing the tables used by the extension did help but again, still pretty slow.

I would really like to continue using OpenCart but this speed issue is really taking its toll and I'm not sure we can do it much longer. Amazon Webstore was our next choice but we would like to stick with OpenCart if possible.

I was hoping with the implementation of OpenCart 2.0 that I might be able to add all these products without such a slowdown in performance. Is this a possibility? Honestly, I assumed that the update to OpenCart 2.0 was more of a cosmetic upgrade rather than anything else.

I would rather make sure to peek your existing version, as long as Version 2.xx is not really FINAL.
This test shop here contains 10'000 test products, with product counting active, by use of about 1'900 sample images.

Yep, I agree with IP_CAM, don't go the v2.0 way just yet.

Thanks for the reply. What have you actually done to OpenCart to accomplish this?
