Basic responsive theme to cusomize

Sorry if this has been asked a thousands times, but its very hard to find this information.
I'm just looking for a version of the default theme that is truly responsive.i.e not just hide the left or right columns, and do all the clever stuff like turning the categories module into a drop down menu item
I've tried YooResponsive but it just hides the left column on mobile devices, "elastic" sort of works but is overcomplicated with animations and other rubbish, Yuppme didnt work at all for me, well it didn't render
I'll happily buy a commercial theme, but even the best selling ones like shoppica that have online demo's don't let you put modules in the left or right column, so its impossible to tell without buying them whether they are any good, or would be just the same as YooResponsive
I'm not after anything fancy. Just something that I can use as a base to customize.
