Number of product inconsistencies

I have about 1250 products on my site. In the admin section when I look at the product list it shows that I have 1223, if I do a search for "s" in the front end it comes up with 1237 and when I look at the product table in phpMyAdmin it shows 1253.
I'm using v. 1.5.6.4
Can anyone explain why there is a difference in the numbers?
