How to add a personalised message to the cart page?

I am setting up a gift type store and would like a text box on the cart page that customers can enter a personalised message that will show up on the order. We have the option to add a gift card to order but no where at present for the customer to enter this message to include in card.

I have figured out how to add the text box etc. to the cart but not sure how to create a submit button and also how to get the entered text/message to appear at the checkout and also on the order.

Sort of a similar feature to how you can add a text box (option) to the product page. I would use this but i would rather my customer only has to enter the message once at the cart screen rather than multiple times at the product page depending on how many products they purchase.

I am running opencart version 1.5.6.1. Any help will be very much appreciated.

There are some extensions in the store that do this for you already. Have you searched?
