Control Panel Features

Does anyone have experience modifying the control panel, adding fields to inventory, adding the fields in the display in the front end. I work for a company who is using open cart for their store, which we are trying to add some features too, like more auto emails, some confirmation features emailing suppliers when inventory has been ordered. Some of this will take place in the main control panel, so we want to add some options and fields to the control panel.

If anyone has time to devote to this, I am also a php/mysql programmer, so I am looking for someone to do certain parts of the project, and give me advice on where to put some of these features in the code. I am new to the structure of Opencart and CodeIgniter.
