Version, theme? You should start with those.
The bottom pair of links in http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php ... 80#p439397 will give you an overview. You're far enough along that they'll be easy reading.
No, OC does not go into "the" SSL directory -- OC has its own public tree.
On a localhost (your own 127.0.0.1) and on some public servers you can use self-generated certificates, which can be useful for figuring out hows and whys, and which often can actually be used (subject to host policies, and it is a good idea to tell the host).

Thank you for your reply butte,
I know how to enable SSL in OpenCart and have had no trouble doing so on my online setup.
However working in a local development environment setup by the Uniform Server it just doesn't seem so straight forward because to use SSL you have to put whatever website you are working on in the SSL folder and every other website in the WWW folder.
So I'm just assuming OpenCart can't work that way then because not all pages are supposed to be server over a secure connection?!
leave uniform server and go to ampps
this is a platform more like most hostings, whre there is only one folder whre your shop is running and you can assign a self signed certificate to that as well

Neither uniform server nor _amp is the real deal. If you install, on Windows, and NOT in the "Programs and . . ." tree but instead into /apache/ and /bin/ right off the root, the appropriate WIndows binaries for Apache, for php (preferably 5.3.x rather than 5.4. or 5.5.x), for mysql, for whatever else you want to have, THEN you will have a localhost server arrangement that effectively matches what you can do on a public one. You will also have full control over complete software configurations, not almost complete control over almost complete sets of anything.
I agree with victorj, abandon uniform server; but I disagree as to _amp anything for the same reasons. Install the real deal. That has the added advantage that you will learn how to wrestle with a Windows as well as with a Linux server over Apache, php, and mysql. Bear in mind that spaces in directory and file names is nowadays accommodated by Linux distributions but is best avoided (use _ or - or aCapInPlaces to make sense of names if you "must" read them).

ampps is great for developing opencart and or any other website on your own computer, playing and learning.
its not a production server, and it does not intend to be a production server.
but for anybody who want to learn, play and test their development its is a great simple to install solution

Although this thread is a few months old thought it worth an update.
