Moving search box into side menu

Sorry if this has been asked before, I have done a search but was unable to find an answer.
I want to move the search from the header into the side under the modules. I found there was a module available but it is for an older version than 1.4 and doesn't work.
Any suggestions on the best way (or possibly just the easiest way) to do this?
