Hi

I'm new here, and to opencart but so far very impressed.

I recently ran into a minor problem and hoped someone could shed some light on how I might get things working again.

When adding a new image in the image manager all goes well and the image is uploaded to the server. However, suddenly some of the thumbnails in the image manager disappear. The main image still exists, but the thumbnail goes.

I have looked at the error logs and it seems to be a problem with memory. My host has kindly increased my virtual and physical memory to 1.5GB which has helped for the immediate problem. But the memory issue is coming back when I upload images.

Has anyone come across this, and does anyone have any ideas on how I might get things working properly again?

In php.ini for execution/memory/post/upload maxima set 300/512M/999M/998M. If server honors your php.ini those should take. The same settings may or may not be possible to change in host control panel at php. See below for orientation.

Thanks for the advice. I have searched for the php.ini and discovered that the hosting provider does not allow direct access to edit this file. They have looked at the php.ini and found that it is set to 128MB which is the highest they will allow.

Our hosting is currently shared hosting. The host has offered an upgrade to VPS where we could make any changes required to the php.ini. It is quite a bit more expensive though!

Do you have any advice on how to move forwards on this?

Yeah, change hosts. The master php.ini file is for the server's own system admin to tinker with, and for good reason nobody will let you near the nearly 2,000 lines in that file. The 128M is quite reasonable, but not being allowed to set anything at all is silly. You'll see two php.ini files in OC. Those may be honored or ignored by the server, regardless of what support says or thinks. If ignored, you cannot set anything. If honored, you can change some settings. If you change php.ini and throw 500, just revert the file and the 500 will go away. Which host is it? Shared in and of itself is not the problem, some shared arrangements actually are better than some unshared ones. For alternatives see PM.
