Showing filters on Brand/Manufacturer pages?

I know there's an extension for filtering Brand pages by Category, so I'm wondering if this might be possible. The way my products work, I list them by category and link them to the manufacturer, but I'd also like users to be able to view all items from one category that belong to the same collection within a manufacturer. So basically, something like this:

Manufacturer Page
--> Collections (Filter)
--> Collection 1 (show products from ALL categories within ONE collection)
--> Collection 2

etc.

I have a solution for this, I mean linking the products from the Manufacturer page also to their category. I can create a vQmod that will also display the product's category as a link under the product name, for each product.

How does this solution sound to you?

In my opinion, having a filter by category will affect site's performance and speed, because you have to loop through all the products on the page and create a list of unique categories to show in the drop-down, each time it loads.
