this is an error I received during the upgrade to open cart version 1.5.6 Notice: Error: Can't DROP 'ft_namerel'; check that column/key exists
Error No: 1091

any ideas would be appreciated

Normal software has undergone testing and is released stable. OpenCart is released willy-nilly and fixed ad hoc.

WHY UPGRADE?

I see NO need for this!

Why upgrade, really? Why issue a release if you don't want people to use it? I did a brand new, fresh install two days ago only to find a new release including amazon payments out the next day (I am presuming it works for US users now, but I am unsure). I would like to implement the Amazon payments without having to purchase an add-on module if at all possible. The release still has bugs- I get it. I've backed up all my pertinent files to restore should I have any issues. Still worth a try, IMO. Esp. if I can get more functionality.

Well a simple glance at the download page should make thing's pretty clear



Plus this release was solely a commission release. Unless you needed Amazon or ebay exporting, there really wasn't any need to upgrade to this if you already have a working store. You can see many people slamming the unnecessary inclusion of OpenBay into the core so I wouldn't be surprised if it was removed in another release.

You know, when someone goes to download OpenCart, I guarantee you they will be downloading the newest release, not skimming the release history to find out if they should wait a few days for a hotfix. You (or whomever the site admin is) may want to make a note of this in the download area. I digress- I am happy to help with correcting by offering up my error message as was requested in the upgrade notes.

Honestly, I wanted the added functionality, but understand that new scripts take time to work out the bugs.. I am even okay with helping the process. Quite frankly what I don't understand is the negative attitude. So I will revert back to the previous (stable) release, not DARE try to upgrade again for a few months lest I be told off, and if I get any errors you best believe I'll work it out myself or stay quiet. You win.

The main issue with OpenCart releases is that there is not real release-path.

That has been discussed MANY time before and promises have been mode to get some system in place to GUARANTEE stable releases.

This is a discussion we had for about 4 years since I stumble upon OpenCart.

Only with the latest 1.4.x releases done by Qphoria we had a sort of release path and system.

Now with 1.5.x, we are all back in the dark(ages).

This is something I want to discus with Daniel when he is in Amsterdam next week because this HAS TO CHANGE if we want to be taken seriously.

That said, PrestaShop is basically the same, or sometimes even worse but they have a beta release path which will turn into a public release after loads of testers have de-bugged it.

I agree with the above. When it's free, people want what they think is the latest and greatest which is the newest version listed. The people who have been around for awhile know that the newest isn't always the most stable but that does nothing to address the new users who don't know this. Maybe the newest releases need to go on a beta download page to better differentiate this?

Maybe there needs to be a "stable", "beta", etc labeling system. I've seen another shopping cart software company use RC for Release Candidate to track versions as well.

You are Correct! OpenCart should make Beta Versions. I think they don't fully test them.

Amen. OpenCart has so much going for it but stuff like this really holds the project back.

Both sides are right in this thread. You should have a conservative upgrade cycle on an ecommerce store but there's also an expectation of stability when a new version is released.

You'd think so, but oddly a lot of people still download "1.5.5" instead of "1.5.5.1". 1.5.5 is fatally flawed with most mods so I get a support request once a week about some language file error which is related to getting 1.5.5 instead of 1.5.5.1 and I ask why they didn't download the newer file.... I usually get a blank face type answer.

And then there is Installatron of course, which helpfully upgraded for me. >_<

Obviously they are somewhat aware of the problems this can cause since there is an option to “backup and update to new minor versions and security releases” but I suppose the problem is how do you define a minor version. People seem addicted to using more and more complex version numbers (or the opposite like Mozilla), but it’s not always clear what they mean.

I’m guessing Installatron assumes that all third level versions are stable, but for OpenCart it seems like fourth level (1.5.6.1)?

i just upgraded to 1.5.6 version.
The website is working normally after run the first upgrade step.
The second step is asking upgrade another parts of it. But unlucky it cannot finish the upgrade and show me the error message on the page when i click "CONTINUES"

To be fair to the people posting with upgrade problems, most of them only have one or two posts - we can't really expect new forum users to be aware of OpenCart's idiosyncrasies.

For the new folks, welcome to the forums and please don't take the responses the wrong way - if you wait a couple of days then there should be another point release that fixes some of the problems in 1.5.6/brings it up to a usable state - if your store is working as it is now, leave it be and wait for the latest OpenCart CE release before upgrading.

Another issue you might run into is that (someone who know what they're talking about can correct me here because I may be talking through my hat) the downloads from this site can change to be bug-fixed without the version number changing - so keep a copy of your original download in case you ever need to diff it with the latest download to diagnose a bug or problems with a VQMod.
