VERY quick question on VQMOD utility

I have installed VQMOD successfully. If I have extensions that use VQMOD do I put the extra xml files in addition to the existing opencart xml file, or am I supposed to merge to contents of the two files together.

Reason I am asking is have just added the product options max length extension, which works fine if I remove the original opencart xml file. Just want to ensure I am using this vqmod thing correctly before I get too into it.

Thanks 'grgr'. I have a feeling there is a flaw in the option max length extension, but just wanted to make sure that the xml templates were meant to exist side by side first.
