Product Grid Image Holders

Hi,

I have been trying to get rid of the white backgrounds in the product image holders, in the grid and list views.

I have searched on here but cannot find anything that helps.

I know I can set specific sizes in the control panel but that doesn't help as the images that will be on display are in different formats, for example one image will be in landscape format and another could be square, portrait or panorama. It's the background i need to change in the holders if anybody can point me to the code that would be great.

I have attached a screenshot of what I mean, ideally I would like the site background to replace the white areas around the images.

Thanks for the links, I really appreciate your help.
I hadn't realised it was such a major issue until I read the link for the Auto-type code, I guess I'm not the only one who has got all frustrated trying to solve it
