I am using OC 1.4.9.3
We sell bins and I want to be able to provide our customer with the option to search by size/dimension of a product.

If you sell mostly standard sizes you could use filters and attributes. Not perfect but it would give some search function. You're limited on options as you're on an old OC version. If you were on 1.5 upwards you could use something like this to search:
