i appriciate what you want to do but, check what uatism is.
people who do have autism are born that way.
during the first time off development when the brain is formed some brain patterns wich controls emotion emphatie, feeling etc are not formed as it should.
Depending on in wich part of the autistic spectrum someone is diagnosed it is more or less telling how they will function in a social enviroment.
autoistic persons are not ill do not make more medical expenses, they are fully functional within their own world and capabilities.
typically someone with autism has a problem fuctioning in what we call the normal world as they are not ccapable of interpreting human emotions as they dont know them/dont have them.
most often they stick to what where they are comfortable and usualy are extreemly driven and good in that paticalar field.
Sorry to bring this up, but as a father of a autistic son we had to do a great deal to educate ourself and although im not considering that im a expert my experience has told me that that parent know more than specialist who treats peaople

Tcalp, notwithstanding whether you might have overreacted, you might let her know to check with her Indiana State and County mental or behavioral health departments for information regarding her son's needs, in relation both to his diagnosis and condition, and to her economic situation. The diagnosis is inherently complex, varying among largely overlapping autism, Asperger's syndrome, and several other manifestations of variably timed multiple causes, and was only fairly recently understood as being that complex. There are several kinds of licensed therapists and counselors, many of whom devote their efforts to children. There are ordinarily county, sometimes city, and ordinarily private, walk-in-walk-out facilities, in addition to solo practitioners. Those can work small wonders, little by little, and they will be well aware of what can best be done without or with any medications at all. She should also seek out others, not just single moms, who have autistic or similarly affected children of differing ages, in order to get a grip on how to go about what, at what expected or avoidable cost, where. There will be "encounter groups" for parents to explain, ask, vent, cry, and otherwise support one another, on a plane that medical detachment will not reach for the purpose. As victorj noted, self-education will be among her major ongoing pursuits, all the more so as he grows and his manifestations change in several ways. I happen to have good friends who work with or who are parents of such children, and I've been impressed by how with due attention and love their autistically related disabilities are not at all debilitating (in stark contrast, for example, to Down's syndrome). She has much to look forward to as he grows and develops in his own very special way.
Equally I'm aware that it's not a physical/mental Illness and that autism exists at different levels, and that it is generally an inability (or less then normal depending) to learn via normal communication, and equally communicate.
I could entirely be wrong in any of the above.
Most of what I know comes from Movies as I don't know of anyone with Autism myself (which is obviously a pretty poor source).
I just saw/heard about the sale and thought I'd try to help out.

experience?
what you say makes a lot of sense.
as i i from the netherlands, where we all have to pay for medical insurance, we are not affected with cost as al of this is payed all out through insurance.
as you say self education talk to parent who are in the same situation and already invented the wheel is the best way to go.
no one and i state no one knows a child better than the mother or father whatever degree specialist are having .
thats one of the lessons i learned other peaople can guide you but it all comes down to the parents they are the one that makes the difference

All due credit goes to the children themselves. Parents and specialists guide each other while they make their respective contributions to the children's responses.
Nonetheless, it will still be appropriate for someone to move the thread to Off-Topic. As to OC General Support all of this is on thin if not unfrozen ice.
