I understand where you're coming from. Official maintenance releases would have been preferable by far. It just got to the point where after years of promises something had to be done (we already have over 100 commits on 1.5.5.1).

I hate to say it but I've been thinking more and more lately about forking OpenCart, especially with both 1.5.5 and 1.5.6 having major issues on release. It's not at all desirable but OpenCart's features are getting stagnant, the release cycle is, frankly, completely broken, and years on we still don't have a proper extension system even though that's the major revenue source for the project. And I'm at the point where I'm really doubting the situation is ever going to improve.

We do see amongst the several carts, severally as well as singly, major and lesser branching, variously diverging from or still paralleling other efforts, and overall the same sort (albeit less) of purposeful and fairly faithful parallelism seen amongst the several Distributions of Linux. Original Windows NT was the product of one mind. "Then it happened." A saving grace here is a fairly strong sense of community and of shared commitment. Some of it is a bit alike trying to carry home in one's pocket or lunch pail an ant hill but not let it entirely loose in the house.

. . . and pausing but not stopping for delivery or deliverance of offspring of its own genesis. Not easy.

One thread offers a practical solution:
http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=106677

to this problem:
Notice: Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'AFTER `price`' at line 1
Error No: 1064
ALTER TABLE `oc_profile` CHANGE `frequency` `frequency` ENUM AFTER `price` in

Plural threads and isolated posts accordingly bear cross-linkage, at least for the sake of noting its prevalence:
http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php ... 21#p424887 (with a user's editorial comment below it)
http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=106706 (with perspectives)
http://forum.opencart.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=106973

[EDIT, ADDED:] Low on pg. 1 of this thread aw1116 appears to have been about the fourth forum-wide to mention Error No. 1064, and there are now apparently still few occurrences. Instances are beginning to proliferate a little bit, perhaps according to whether people search carefully first (or don't search). The snippet immediately above can be searched as-is; some do not try. The problem is known, it will undoubtedly be remedied in 1.5.6.1 in due course.

Part of me wants to just write a script to remove all the openbay stuff and apply the handful of fixes and require that anyone using mods or requesting support from me run that first. But I'm sure as soon as I finish the script, 1.5.6.1 will be released rendering it mostly useless.

Talking to the part of you that wants to write the script. I am sure I would be in a long line waiting for it.
Doesn't even matter to me if they do come out with 1.5.6.1 after. I just want this former OPTION to return to said status.
It is really sad to not have the choice to opt out of this option by a click of a button. Since profile and profile_description entered my database as tables, (MY FAULT because I was upgrading everything, and included the OC core), my site is useless.
