You are absolutly right, no need of reinventing as there are good exaples on how to do it looking at SMF.
I wished that Daniel would share his comments on this.
He is re-designing the contribution site and when mods start showing up using this method of installing it would be better if there is a way of showing that mods using this installer are Certified so others know that they will work and are safe to use.

I'm not sure if this is possible or if its even been done? (I don't use many CMS, forums ect) But to have a database of mods on OC then a link in the admin panel say 'mods' then the EU gets a list of mods and can simply click the wanted mod and it will install it on to their OC system, no need for downloading files and uploading them.
This would make it much easier to find mods with them all being in the same place and make them really easy to install. This would also insure people are using the latest version of the mod and not an out dated one found on another site somewhere.
Just an idea, not even sure if its technically possible but would be cool.

Yes, that was mentioned as part of this in another thread. That is phase 3 and actually very easy to do once the other parts are in place
