Well it would be an option.. but I need to get it working that way still. Maybe Jonathan can figure it out

Alright, I finally finished this. It took much longer than I expected, because it turned out to be more complex than I originally thought, but I got it working the way I wanted. It includes these features:
- The last dropdown can show sub-categories or products, and can be set from the admin backside.
- The dropdown display reflects the current category/sub-category/product location.
- Works properly with SEO URLs.
- Supports unlimited sub-categories. (Right now I've tested it up to 6 deep, but it should work recursively for any amount.)
- Includes a side-module template and a home-module template. The home module lists the categories/products as <select> lists rather than dropdowns, for easy clicking.
For anyone who's interested, you can test it out at
my demo site. It's the top-left module that's titled "Categories". For an example of a three-tier category, take a look at Desktops > Mac > Mac Servers.
trof83, let me know if this will work for you and I'll set it up on my site for purchase today or tomorrow.

I haven't heard back from
trof83, so I decided to go ahead and post the module in my store. You can get it here:

Hi Johnathan,
sorry, I believe you haven't heard back from him because I didn't realise you were working on it and built it for him meantime.
Didn't mean to cut in on your project.

No worries, you had no way of knowing. It would have been nice of trof to let me know, but I suppose nothing can be done about it now.
Hopefully someone else will find it useful!

Based on your PM about this.. it sounds like you want the one Jonathan made here:

.. it's a bit different than the one I was working on
