Writing own payment module

I have the need for a payment module that can access South African payment gateways

I do I get started on developing such a module?

Do you have developer documentation?

You're best bet is to see how the other payment modules are done and follow the format. Check both the included paypal payment and the ones that the community created on the main opencart.com site.

For example, the included paypal extension file is in catalog/extension/payment/paypal.php

more or less the same. modules in the case of OpenCart 0.7.x refers to sections of the main site like the header, footer, etc. A module is a subset of Extension. Just like payment, shipping, etc.
