Is Authorize.net (SIM) similar to the standard Paypal checkout process? As in, is the customer redirected to a secure authorize.net site for transaction, then returned back? If so, does anyone have a module for Authorize.net (SIM) for sale or can make me one?

Yes it is almost same as paypal IPN and can be done.
