Hey guys, I am new to OpenCart world. I used to be developer in my previous life, but am already out for some years.
I need an easy and decent opensource eshop which I will be extending for my client's need.
Question, is version 4.1 the best choice for long-term use, lasting at least five years before requiring an update due to technological advancements?
Is it stable, fast, and free of bugs?

OpenCart 4.1.0.0 is too new for developers to know if it's bug-free or stable. I've already found a few minor bugs myself, so there are likely others lurking in there. If you know PHP and HTML, and are willing to fix bugs yourself, then it would be fine to use.
However, if you want to start a new store and have a more stable and bug-free version, use 3.0.4.0. It's available here:

That is the version recommended for new stores by almost all OpenCart developers, and there are more extensions for it since it's an older version as well. You shouldn't need to update for at least 5 years, or longer.

I think every new version is going to have some sort of bugs. 4.0.0.0 was released almost 3 years ago. Is the Version 4 just no good at all? I don't see any of the regulars recommending it. It's always 'use the most up to date of the Version 3 branch'.Johnathan wrote: ↑Thu Jan 30, 2025 9:08 pmOpenCart 4.1.0.0 is too new for developers to know if it's bug-free or stable. The initial 4.0.0.0 version was very buggy, so developers held off recommending it until the bugs were fixed. Many of them were in the intermediate releases, but even in 4.0.2.3 there were still some bugs that would affect normal usage. That version was released in September 2023, so the bugs stuck around for 1 year and 4 months until 4.1.0.0 was released. During that entire period, developers were recommending that people use the stable 3.0 branch for new stores because it was less buggy, more stable, had PHP 8 support, and had many more extensions for it.
4.0.2.3 was certainly usable if you were willing to fix some bugs yourself. However, for new users the 3.0 branch was just a better choice because they wouldn't have to deal with fixing things or searching for extensions. That's why we all recommended it.
I don't have an assessment of 4.1.0.0 yet because I haven't used it much, but I will say that so far it seems pretty good. I've run into a few bugs, though, which is why I always recommend new users don't try out the latest version. Wait until at least 4.1.0.1 and 4.1.0.2 and we should (hopefully) have a new OpenCart version to recommend.
