(extension creation) Where can i place image assets that will be used in frontoffice and backoffice?

I'd appreciate any help and thanks in advance.
Where can I place image assets that will be used in frontoffice and backoffice?
I have come across this problem when trying to add a payment method logo image in the order history (that is viewed in the backoffice and frontoffice) and also to mail sent to the user.
What I found was that if I place the image in the catalog folder, ill have problems when accessing from admin and vice versa.
I have tried to set them at image/payment/myextension/logo.png, but when I run the installer it won't allow it, responding with "The directory image/payment is not allowed to be written to!"
So, isn't there a public folder where I can place assets for this purpose?

So one of admin/view/image/, catalog/view/theme/ or image/catalog/.

Is it correct to assume that I should NOT place extension asset images to image/catalog/?
I would think it's for product images only...
