Here are my tools:
- General Editors: gedit
- HTML and PHP editor: Bluefish Editor, Netbeans
- Diff Tool: Not using any
- FTP Client: Filezilla
- Validator: validate.w3.org
- Database Tools: Phpmyadmin, MySQL Workbench
- Graphics Editor: Gimp
- Vector Graphics: Inkscape

In my case I just started to get into this exciting world of websites, so I'm basically using notepad for HTML editing because it's free and simple to use. I have seen plenty of options in this post so I will probably take note of some of them. Thanks for sharing them guys. Regards.

I use Mac.
Just discovered Text Wrangler, much better than Text Edit in a Mac. It is free.
FTP: I don´t use other that Cyberduck. I don´t know if it is the best or the worst: is the only one I use. Its free.

Coding
Adobe Dreamweaver 99.9% of the time; Microsoft Visual Studio on the rare occasion I have to code an ASP.NET site; during the dotcom boom around 1999–2000, it was BBEdit.

Dev Server
WAMP (php development)
IIS (asp.net development)*
Coldfusion (Coldfusion development)*

*These last two are rarely used anymore as pretty much most of my current work is php/MySQL-based.

Graphics
Illustrator and Photoshop are the mainstays. On Occasion, Flash and Autodesk Maya/3ds Max.

Video/Audio editing
Adobe Premiere and After Effects for video work and Steinberg Nuendo for Audio.
Camtasia for instructional screencasts.

FTP
Dreamweaver, as local/testing/remote servers are all tied in when you create a site; If I need a stand-alone FTP for huge batch uploading, I use FlashFXP at home and WinSCP at work.

Another vote for Notepad++, it's the only code writing tool I use for HTML, php and css.

I prefer Notepad++ for general editor, Kompozer for HTML editor, Gimp, Photoshop CS6, AI, PHPmyadmin, Chorme

Can't believe the hate with FileZilla, something doesn't need to have a cost to be great!

Qphoria. Very good and you started this back in 2008 ! Maybe the best thread in this forum !! I just discovered it now, because I got the same idea, just about extensions and modules. Maybe we could move it a bit further. If somebody (!) would go thru the whole thread and make a vote with the 20 most mentioned programs ....
It takes time, but ... ah, I see, Vote is not allowed in here?

Anyway, Q, you forgot about File Managers !! I am 65. I started with Norton Commander and later continued withTotal Commander - has built in FTP client. Very good, especially for keyboard freaks like me.

My very first priority looking for new software are 1) Keyboard shortcuts and 2) Usability.

File Manager: Total Commander. with built in FTP client and Zip manager. I ONLY use the keyboard and you can make every shortcut you want.
Editor: Notepad ++
HTML Editor. I have used Word since 1990, later Frontpage for years and now I use WebExpression. You have to disable nearly all settings/preferences, so it does not interfere with your html code.
Image: Paint Shop Pro 5 - very old, but very fast for my needs.
Screen Capture and Recording Software, Video Editor: Camtasia Studio
Newsletters: Group Mail - not well known. Made by people from Ireland. I have used it for years. The only software I know, that can extract email addresses from a text file. Very handy ! It runs on your local computer and has all the settings you need. Nice alternative to MailChimp.
