Upgrading or fresh install

Hi all , just a bit of advice needed. Currently using OC 2.3.0.2, Journal 3 and quite a of extensions!!! Probably need to upgrade to either 4.0.2.3 or 3.0.4.0, should I upgrade or do fresh installation, if it's a fresh installation do I need to migrate the tables then just unsure of the best way to go about this. TIA.

Do a fresh install. You can use the Export/Import tool for carrying over your product data, see our FAQ on this. Then check what extensions you need, and whether they are available for the new OpenCart version.

And user a proper web theme, not the Journal framework, see here.

Thank you for this, that was my feeling too, would you suggest latest version of OC or 3.0.4.0. I understand what you are saying re journal, they are bringing a new version out shortly which promises to "better integration with the core Opencart system and added radically improved performance and usability features both in the admin and storefront". Was looking at the OC theme Ronixa which looks great too but it doesn't offer multistore yet.

If you need a stable version of OpenCart, then use 3.0.4.0. The 4.0.2.3 still has a number of bugs.

Thank you. One of the concerns I would have about the import of data, is for example I have an extensions which adds fields to the orders e.g. tracking info, if install new version and the correct extension, should all the data import correctly then. I suppose just need to examine all extensions carefully.
So if I install new version, install all necessary extensions and then import the data - would that be the best approach?

Well basically getting alot of errors in the background, the site is somewhat sluggish, so probably due too many extensions over time, etc, needs to have an overhaul I feel. Saying that have had OC 2.3.0.2 since 2017 and has served great but it seems the advice on here is to upgrade for reasons such as added security, better functionality, etc. I migrated initially from zencart to here. So I know its a bit of a task to upgrade. I think I need to make a copy of the site as I would be very wary of messing up necessary extensions like seo and the actual downtime of the site if it goes pearshaped!

This is just one example for an error that drives me crazy. Yesterday I changed two products to zero stock, but today the stock quantities were back to 1 and 2 of each of the products, this happens regularly, it must be a caching thing, I don't know but I recorded changing to zero knowing that it very well would revert back and it did and I have no idea why this keeps happening which means a customer then order a product we do not have in stock, very frustrating so another reason why it needs an overhaul.

Yeah that would good, just had a look, can I just ask, does the code check include fixes or suggested fixes, I have error reports running in the background and on the cpanel, loads of checks for no real solutions, well not that I can figure out. Anyway we are based in Ireland so open to taking a call too.

Sorry to say you have extensions that are causing issues where you will need to investigate pretty much on your own. One in particular modifies the controller/product/product.php file that is causing most of those notices. You'll need to investigate what is making those modifications and fix it or disable it. Probably one modification that is acting on that controller. The top notice is for sure Journal related and you can do a search about that template.
For the google_marketing_tools get with the extension developer.

Basically what I am saying is updating the OC version will not fix those as they are the template or extension issues not OC core.

Thank you Mike, will try to pinpoint the problem. I suppose back to my original point, do you think I need to upgrade though also. If I can fix these errors, disable the extension, should I look to upgrading or leave well enough alone. Was going to do a fresh install but was looking for the best way around upgrading/migration from 2.3.0.2 to 3.0.4.0 taking cognisance of the db changes that have taking place, so I know seo is important and would need to ensure this is imported, just trying to see if there is guidelines/checklist and the best steps of doing one or other. TIA.

IMO one way or the other you are going to have to do SOME sort of upgrade.
OC 2.3.0.2 doesn't support PHP 8.x natively and most webhosts are forcing and update to run that. Now if your host has an updated (hardened) 7.4 version then you will have more life but eventually you will need to change to something that supports 8.x.
Now there is a version of OC 2.3.0.2 that works with 8.x but I would caution you that while it worked for us we also had to troubleshot some issues so unless you are savvy in OC it might be above your knowledge (or might not).

OC 3.0.4.0 would be a good bet at this time but you will have the problem of all your extensions. 2.3.0.2 to 3.x went from tpl to twig files for the view portion of the cart so a lot of your extensions will need to be updated or removed.

Now for the rest of the store.... a new install is considered best by a lot of people but that gives you a lot to update. The import/export tool that JNeuhoff told you about above is great for products, options, etc. but it doesn't do the orders. For that I haven't seen a step by step guide on what database tables to move over from your old database to the new OC 3.0.4.0 database.

The template... I would highly suggest going for a template that is only CSS based. I will be honest with you I have my own issue with site speed at this moment but the standard OC is normally pretty quick but journal makes it tough to troubleshoot issues and is bloated.

Yeah that would good, just had a look, can I just ask, does the code check include fixes or suggested fixes, I have error reports running in the background and on the cpanel, loads of checks for no real solutions, well not that I can figure out. Anyway we are based in Ireland so open to taking a call too.
