PayPal, which processes all my payments, including credit-card payments, tells me that criminals have been using my site to test out stolen cards. They think that adding a Captcha to the checkout process will stop this. Would it take an extension to add a Captcha?
My site is set up to allow purchases by "guests" if they don't want to open an account. I am thinking that if I change it to require all customers to open an account (which I must approve), that may stop the problem, as I would verify each new account with a phone call, and I don't think scammers are likely to give me their telephone numbers (although they could possibly use stolen telephones).
Now, here is an added problem: When I switched from one hosting company to another, they apparently didn't copy over all of my shopping-cart files. When I try to go into the "Localisation" portion of Admin (Countries, Zones, Geozones), nothing is in there. It's possible the scammers are operating from another country which would otherwise be blocked if I still had country restrictions in place.
Thank you all. Any suggestions?
I have Windows 10 and a couple extensions from long-ago, but I'm no longer sure which ones came with the program or which I added. I think the ones that I added are Total-Based Shipping and Automatic Discount.
I always use Ninja Firewall and Cidram on my OC sites. Cidram will block traffic from dubious sources.Purebeads wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 4:24 pmMy 1.4.8 cart, to the best of my knowledge, has never had a built-in Captcha as part of the check-out process. Why that matters is this:

Of course it would if that extension is compatible with 1.4.8.

Cidram has a captcha built in. Try it. It's very good. IMO Cidram is better than any extension you can get.

Sorry, I should have responded to what you said before, but I see the word "Github" and begin to phase out. It's not that I'm not intelligent and can't work on programs behind the scenes, but I hate the learning curve.
So, what is Cidram and would it be compatible with my version of OpenCart?
But my other question is this: Maybe I just need to require my customers to create an account. That feature is already built into the version of OC that I have. That would allow me to weed out whichever customer is causing the problem.
I've got an anti spam extension which is basic but usable but it only works on OC 1.5. I would still rather use Cidram though.

I have already taken one step, and that is that customers must open an account in my shopping cart before placing an order. I must approve new accounts before they can be used.
All of this trouble started after I placed a note on this forum about another problem, so I wonder if there might be a scammer lurking on this forum reading the posts. Whoever it is may be aware of the weaknesses of the older OpenCart versions.
It doesn't sound like it's a hard problem to fix. Install Ninja Firewall and Cidram. You don't need a web site editor program. You need Filezilla to upload any missing system files. I would have it done in 30 mins probably.Purebeads wrote: ↑Tue Jan 09, 2024 11:24 amThank you. Part of the problem is that I purchased a new computer, and do not have a website editing program on the new computer. I will have to install one.

I doubt there's a scammer but even if there is if your site is secure they won't be able to get in or scam you. Get it fixed and get back to selling.

Exactly. So search the marketplace for one? CAPTCHAs are not new inventions.

Everything is working out, however. Requiring all my customers to open an account in the cart has stopped the scammers. I have already gotten four requests from scammers to open accounts, but I am just deleting them. The surprising thing is that version 1.4.8 of OC doesn't give me their IP addresses. It doesn't matter, though. For the moment, the problem is solved.
Also, my brother is coming to the rescue. He is an engineer very much into computers. He is familiar with Github, and he's going to help me install a Captcha. He's also going to look over the shopping cart files, and together we will restore the missing geolocation files (which I still have stored on my home computer). So everything is working out. Once I familiarize myself with Cidram, I'm sure I'll want it. He agrees with me, by the way, that version 1.4.8 has the style and design my site needs. I never liked the newer versions of OC.
Talking about newer versions . . . if I did decide to upgrade, can my current database be used with the new OC version, or are the fields all different? When I looked into upgrading before, it was not an automated process in the way that most computer programs are these days.
Thanks to everyone.
Cidram will cut out a lot of scammers as it bans sources from where they originate.
