First of all, thank you for all your job.
I have tried opencart and think that it is on the way to be a great product.
Have the developpement team thinking about using an PHP framework ?
There are many available for PHP5. I suggest KOHANA which I have experience with. it is very simple to use, based on MVC, an have many features already developped. a filesystem (like includes PATH) allow to modify the core libraries and templates without changing the code of the core.
Using a Framework save time to concentrate on e-commerce core business.
I had been spearheading a "Template-based" override system and discussions on the topic have led us to actually take a look at KOHANA for its override system to prevent core file editing like you say. Feel feel to join us in the convo here
I am all in favor of getting an override system in place asap.

There's no interest in using an existing framework, they tend to do a lot more than is necessary for this project.
Daniel enjoys building his own framework that is tailored for the project.
To my knowledge much of the framework is actually based on other frameworks theories, utilizing the best aspect from each.
I support Daniel in this approach as it means a lean, mean, ecommerce machine.

Agreed. Now if we can just take the pieces we need from a framework that has an override system.. or create some sort of a 'dynamic modular merging' system like the kohana example.. that would be great.
