I have been having a few new customers say that they can't register because the site says that their email is not valid. The last one being customername@hotmail.co.uk
However, I can add them via the admin panel without any issue and there is nothing in the error logs.
What can be causing this?

Could be the leading or trailing space issue as suggested by stephmens.
If the problem only occurs at checkout and not at account register. You could try changing your themes email field to the email type.
