404 means it cannot find it.

sitemap.xml only works if you are using the htaccess file.

url needs to be fQDN, I.e. https://YOU_DOMAIN/index.php?route=extension/feed/google_sitemap

How many products and categories do you have? The OpenCart sitemap can be slow to load and Google will give up if it takes too long.

Hello mate,
Please check whether the sitemap enable or not and if there is any issue please let me know. Following are the steps-

Go to Admin >> Extensions >> Extensions >> Choose the extension type >> Feeds then install the Google Sitemap extension and then edit it and change the status to “Enabled” and save it. Now your sitemap URL will be given there which looks like:
https://sitename.com/index.php?route=ex ... le_sitemap
I hope this will help you out. If still you have any queries then please let me know.

that sitemap xml is good.

if google thinks it is too slow, you can always cache it and refresh the cache upon changes, I do.

This is strange and I think it may be a recent change at Google or may be something in OpenCart's code.

I have had a couple of customers who use our sitemap extension also say they could not submit a sitemap to Google Webmasters Tools

We worked the problem and figured out that adding a trailing slash to the sitemap URL for our extension seemed to work.

Unfortunately, adding a trailing slash does not seem to work with the built-in OC sitemap extension - returns 404 - Not sure why our extension works with it as we do nothing special with the routing etc.

So I am guessing it is a search console change/issue.

Found this on Google's Community Forum (see answers towards the bottom of the page)

I agree, if google says you have an issue, don't automatically assume they are correct, many times the issue is theirs.
