I feel your pain ..
Is this just venting frustration or is there something you are asking?
Standard Opencart has a grouping option, but you still have to put them into groups.
You can request commercial support to do this for you ?

No frustration, just a suggestion for further development.
I am not aware of a function to group options. How to use it?
Yes, I will definitely need expert help once I decided to go commercial. At the moment I am still evaluating, trying things to find what I actually wont.

Catalog => Product => Options
I had to deal with tens of thousands of options
3 items with 10 options
10 items with 6 options
etc etc.
the 10 options for 3 items can be grouped
the 6 options for 10 items can be grouped
From a different perspective - all of these had individual cost and selling prices and required individual product numbers - so the step to add these groups to each product is necessary. Opencart actually does pretty well not to constrict things too much so the extensions can be used to suit the individual requirements.
BTW: There are commercial products available to import and export. Definitely helps to update price lists especially if you have multiple manufacturers with price updates yearly - and people who will do this for you.

Thank you, what you describe is a similar situation I move towards. Already employ the extension export/import tool successfully. Good suggestion to modify the options in a spreadsheet.
And I am eyeing the extension Improved Options 3 . But first I have to form an opinion on how to join my present situation and OpenCart. After all, I have to tell a professional what I want. Already decided to change my SKU's to better suit OC.
Still grouping options would be a nice feature for a future version of OC. I am in prosthetics and to put all the required options into a group "Feet" or "Knee-Braces" would make life easier.

The only problematic with Option Groups is the planning and support with the data integration process involved while transitioning between stores. While using Option Groups may reduce the workload on one side, it may also increase the workload furthermore on the orders since past orders do not contain option groups but new orders will and would be as heavy to handle (perhaps more) than what the admin - > catalog - > products page already provides.
Dedication and passion goes to those who are able to push and merge a project.
