Subcategories on homepage

Hi there,
Is there any way I can keep my main categories across the top but have my sub categories displayed down the left hand side without having to click on a main category first ?

A way to do this using modules and extensions would be preferable as I'm crap with HTML 😀😀

The question would be to know on what customers may originally rely to if the main category has not been queried on the URL in the first place in order to show their relative sub-categories ...

In other words, how would the customers know about the existence of the category ID in order to reach those sub-categories on the lower-left of the left content of your theme?
