The company that set it up is still hosting but not offering any support now and I have no idea what to check or where to start - I am a dinosaur when it comes to IT.
many thanks

to have a certain basic knowledge, or one cannot expect others to help, to get them onto their feet.
OC is all about money, for everybody involved, and for those, unable to handle it, a range of DEV's
are just waiting to assist. It's like fixing a Car Engine, if one is not a mechanic, one has to get one.
Sorry for the bad News ...

Good luck

There are a few things to keep in mind when setting up an online business:
First, is the right server solution for you: cPanel (shared), Cloud, VPS, or dedicated.
Two, is the database type: MySql (deprecated), MySqli (recommended), PDO or MsSql.
Three, is the PHP version: 5.4.x (minimum), 5.6.x or 7.x.x.
Four, is the shopping cart software: OpenCart v1.5.6.4 in your case.
Regarding the server solution, I prefer cPanel myself (shared hosting) because cPanel gives me a good control over my hosting. Dedicated hosting is also very good but tends to be much more expensive since you rent an entire server exclusively for yourself. Cloud and VPS are fast but may not give you as much control over your server. OpenCart runs very well on shared hosting.
The database type should be MySqli really, but PDO works fine too.
The PHP version for OpenCart v1.5.6.4 should be v5.6.x for better results.
The software: OpenCart v1.5.6.4 is still very good, but does Not support PHP 7.x.x!
So, the first thing you need to do is to indentify what you are actually paying for.
Once you have done that, if your developer doesn't want to help you anymore, get in touch with your hosting provider and change your hosting package to one you can control yourself. Alternatively find another developer to take-over the existing solution.
If it is still too much for you, I might be able to help you.

The server's configuration is most likely the problem here.

well, an 1.5.6.4/1.5.6.5_rc will work very well by use of up to PHP v.7.0.22, but NOT PHP 7.1.x,
only the installation routine will not support PHP 7.x.x, as it comes by default.
---
I so far only found one Extension, no longer able to function with any PHP 7 Version:
https://www.opencart.com/index.php?rout ... n_id=20624
---
I created a complete and slightly modified 1.5.6.4/1.5.6.5_rc Install Package, to solve this Problem,
if a new Install needs to be made by use of such a Version, it will replace the default install/...
Sub in full. It also includes famous ATOMIX DB-Full-Indexer and InnoBD-Changer, as well as a Mod,
to avoid that nasty re-linking to the install-Sub, after an installation has been finished successfully.
Just to mention this.

Did you change anything recently? Did your host change anything, such as moving to PHP 7? Did you just move to SSL? Go into your hosting control panel file manager and look for files that are new and haven't been there before, or existing files that have suspiciously recent last-modified dates. Such could indicate you've been hacked.

I would suggest that the problem lies with whichever hosting provider they are reselling.
I'd get your site moved to some proper hosting.

I am in need of some assistance. The Problem:
We have an Opencart store that was set up by our previous designer and unfortunately he left on rather bad terms, now we cant access our store's admin login page. All the folders and files are still on the server under public.html/shop and we can view the site via the url but cant get into the backend.
here is the url to the store. http://www.fastenersdirect.co.za/shop/
Is anybody able to assist with this? Let me know what you need. Thanking you in advance.
