Using OpenCart 2.2, and the built in Authorize.net (AIM) extension for payment processing.
I started testing my site, and making purchases.
In last step of checkout I enter all my credit card info, and press Confirm Order button.
Then there was a 12-15 second wait before payment was processed, and I reached success page.
Payment worked, no errors I can see, but is it normal for it to take 12-15 seconds to process the payment?
Are there any Server or PHP settings that affect processing time?
Anything in OpenCart to check about this?

This does seem a bit long. Is everything properly configured within your Authorize.net account? I doubt you're going to see an error on the Opencart site but you can make sure you're logging errors (system -->> settings -->> server), test it again and then check the logs.

I don't think so. Did you go over everything mentioned above?tom327 wrote:are there any PHP settings for the php.ini file that are better optimized to speed up checkout payment processing?

Yes, I found the solution in my case.
It turned out on my server, the spam filter was set for outbound email. And I suspect since I have alert email set for new orders that the filtering was delaying the whole process.
My host company said the php mail function was taking that long to run. Once the outbound spam filter was turned off, the processing at last step of checkout went down to under 2 seconds.

How did you know that there was a spam filter enabled? Is that a PHP setting or something else? How did you change the setting?
I am running into the same thing, it seems to take 10-15 seconds to process and then I often have to hit the confirm button twice to get it to process the order.
